Bring a little "R"eality into your course 2021 Edition

Bring a little "R"eality into your course 2021

In education, the term
Authentic Assessment (AA) is used a lot in reference to help improve student engagement and academic honesty. However, what is it and how can you do it? Traditional Assessment (TA) is a forced-choice assessment, usually tests.  Whereas, AA focus is on students being able to apply or do a task to master a real-world issue (Mueller, 2018). AR/VR/MR/XR/Holo/360 environments (here on out referred to as "R") allow users to interact with a real or realistic environment that has the power to transform classrooms (Loveless, 2021; Meghan Bogardus Cortez, 2017). It can provide hands-on experience that results in student engagement. Purdue so this need and built MetaAR to enable students and teachers to collaborate in AR (Service, 2020). Something that the COVID 19 pandemic taught us is that we still need to be able to learn hands-on. "R" simulates real-world experiences or presents complex information in ways that would not otherwise be possible due to safety, distance, or financial reasons (Dick, 2021). "R" does not replace education, it enhances it just as videos and PPT did for other generations. With the flexibility that it  "can be done by anyone, anywhere" (Ramani, Service, 2020). Let's explore ways how to use some freeware/freemium "R" applications that you can use in your classroom.

Some ways to use "R" in the classroom (Crews, 2018; Fingal, 2021; Major, 2017; Yodar, 2020):
1) Field Trips
2) Communication/Collaboration
3) Apps to Enhance Lessons
4) Citizenship and Empathy
5) Create/Present
